What is a modular classroom?
A modular classroom is a classroom building made as finished sections inside a factory, then delivered and set on its foundation ready for students. Herauf is a modular and portable building manufacturer in Western Canada: classrooms come off the same line as our daycares, built to meet or exceed CSA A277 and the National Building Code and designed to meet childcare and educational facility requirements.

What is Alberta's modular classroom program?
Alberta has committed $600 million to modular classrooms, as part of the $8.6-billion Schools Now program. Of it, $200 million this year funds 189 new modular classrooms for the 2026-27 school year, along with 12 new washroom units, 10 replacements and 29 relocations, for about 5,450 student spaces. Modular classrooms account for 20,000 of the student spaces the wider program will create or modernize.
Alberta Infrastructure works directly with school boards to deliver and install the new classrooms, which go to the boards with the greatest need, including fast-growing rural communities.
How do school boards buy a modular classroom?
There are two routes in public sources. Under the provincial program, Alberta Infrastructure works with the school board to deliver and install the classrooms. For other purchases, the Government of Alberta and public bodies such as municipalities, school boards and health entities post purchasing opportunities on the Alberta Purchasing Connection, and suppliers can view them without registering.

Does Herauf build modular classrooms in Alberta?
Yes. Classrooms, campus buildings and program offices come off the same production line as our daycares, to the same code. For NAIT's Forest Technology program, Herauf manufactured 3 classrooms, 14 dormitory buildings with 56 rooms and a food storage building for the Kidney Lake field school, and installed them on a remote site northwest of Whitecourt, ready for the September intake.
What standard is a Herauf modular classroom built to?
Every unit meets or exceeds CSA A277 and the National Building Code, and the daycare and education line is designed to meet childcare and educational facility requirements. Our buildings are designed and constructed to Section 9.36 of the National Building Code and delivered to meet up to climate zone 8.
How long does a modular classroom take?
Most Herauf builds are manufactured and delivered in roughly 16 weeks, up to 50% faster than conventional construction, because the site is prepared while the building is made. On site, the foundation, the set and the tie-ins are measured in days.
Can a modular classroom be moved later?
Yes, when it is specified that way. Steel-skid foundations with self-contained plumbing, electrical and HVAC let a unit be lifted and moved. Classrooms can also go on a permanent foundation such as piles or a grade beam.
How do Alberta school boards buy modular classrooms?
Under the province's modular classroom program, Alberta Infrastructure works directly with school boards to deliver and install new modular classrooms. Separately, the Government of Alberta and public bodies such as school boards post purchasing opportunities on the Alberta Purchasing Connection, which suppliers can view without registering.
